This classic route crosses three neighbouring countries and mixes big cities, ancient temples and beaches. It works best between November and March.
Days 1–4: Bangkok
Start in Bangkok. See the Grand Palace, Wat Pho and Wat Arun, ride the river boats, and spend evenings at night markets and rooftop bars.
Days 5–8: Chiang Mai
Fly or take the overnight train north to Chiang Mai. Take a cooking class, visit Doi Suthep and choose an ethical elephant sanctuary that does not offer riding.
Days 9–12: Siem Reap and Angkor
Fly from Bangkok to Siem Reap. Spend at least two full days at the temples: sunrise at Angkor Wat, the faces of the Bayon and the jungle-wrapped Ta Prohm.
Days 13–15: Ho Chi Minh City
Fly into Vietnam's southern hub, Ho Chi Minh City. Visit the War Remnants Museum, the Cu Chi Tunnels and take a day trip into the Mekong Delta.
Days 16–18: Hoi An
A short flight to Da Nang brings you to Hoi An: lantern-lit streets, tailors, cycling through rice paddies and An Bang beach.
Days 19–21: Hanoi and Ha Long Bay
Finish in Hanoi with an overnight cruise on Ha Long Bay or quieter Lan Ha Bay.
Getting around
Budget airlines connect all of these cities cheaply. For overland legs in Thailand and Vietnam, trains and buses can be booked in advance online.
