Getting around Asia is part of the adventure. Here is what to expect.
High-speed trains
Japan's Shinkansen, China's vast high-speed network, Korea's KTX, Taiwan's THSR and Uzbekistan's Afrosiyob are fast, punctual and comfortable. Book in advance for busy periods.
Regular and sleeper trains
Thailand, Vietnam, India and Sri Lanka have characterful slower trains, including overnight sleepers.
Budget airlines
Low-cost carriers connect almost every city in Southeast Asia, often more cheaply than long bus journeys. Check bag allowances carefully.
Buses and ferries
Sleeper buses are common in Vietnam and Laos. Ferries and speedboats link islands in Thailand, Indonesia, the Philippines and the Maldives.
Car hire
Self-drive is a great way to explore places like Jeju, Taiwan's east coast, Hokkaido, Sri Lanka (often with a driver) and Malaysia. Check licence rules: many countries require an International Driving Permit.
City transport
Metros in Bangkok, Singapore, Hong Kong, Tokyo, Seoul and Taipei are excellent. Ride-hailing apps such as Grab cover much of Southeast Asia.
