Mobile data is essential for maps, ride-hailing, translation and booking on the go. A travel eSIM gives you data as soon as you land, without hunting for a SIM shop.

How a travel eSIM works

An eSIM is a digital SIM profile you install on a compatible phone by scanning a QR code or through an app. You keep your normal SIM for calls and texts, and switch data to the eSIM when you arrive.

Country or regional plan?

If you are visiting one country, a local plan is usually cheapest. Travelling through several neighbours, such as Thailand, Cambodia and Vietnam, a regional Asia plan saves you from buying multiple packages.

Tips for China

Many Western services, including Google, WhatsApp and Instagram, are restricted on Chinese networks. Travel eSIMs often route data through another country, which can mean these apps keep working. Check the provider's current notes before you go, and also download offline maps.

Setup checklist

  1. Check your phone is unlocked and eSIM-compatible.
  2. Install the eSIM at home on Wi-Fi.
  3. Turn it on and enable data roaming for the eSIM after landing.
  4. Turn off roaming on your home SIM to avoid charges.
