Nepal is the world's greatest trekking destination. Here is how to choose the right route.

Popular treks

  • Everest Base Camp (about 12–14 days): Sherpa villages, monasteries and huge peaks. Starts with a flight to Lukla.
  • Annapurna Circuit (about 12–18 days): diverse scenery and the Thorong La pass at 5,416 m.
  • Annapurna Base Camp (about 7–10 days): into a mountain amphitheatre.
  • Poon Hill (3–5 days): an easy trek with famous sunrise views, starting near Pokhara.

When to go

October and November bring the clearest skies; March to May has warmer days and blooming rhododendrons. The summer monsoon brings rain, leeches and cloud.

Permits and guides

Most treks require permits, and rules on hiring a licensed guide have tightened in recent years in many areas. Check current regulations with Nepal's tourism authorities, and book with a reputable operator.

Altitude safety

  • Ascend slowly and take acclimatisation days.
  • Learn the symptoms of altitude sickness and descend if they worsen.
  • Buy insurance that covers trekking at altitude and helicopter rescue.
