The Maldives on a Budget: Local Islands and Guesthouses

How to visit the Maldives affordably with local-island guesthouses, public ferries and smart resort day trips.

The Maldives does not have to mean thousands per night. Since local islands opened to tourism, guesthouses have made it far more accessible.

Choose a local island

Maafushi, Thulusdhoo, Dhigurah, Fulidhoo and Ukulhas all have guesthouses, bikini beaches and excursions. Thulusdhoo is known for surf; Dhigurah for whale sharks.

Getting there cheaply

Public ferries and shared speedboats link Malé with nearby atolls. They are much cheaper than seaplanes but run on fixed schedules.

Resort day passes

Many resorts sell day passes with lunch and transfers, giving you the overwater-villa experience for a fraction of the price.

Know before you go

  • Alcohol is not available on local islands.
  • Dress modestly away from designated beaches.
  • Friday is the weekend and some services are reduced.

Combine with Sri Lanka for a two-centre trip.
